Stable Isotope Hydrologic Tracers

The CAIS has developed a gas chromatographic method of measuring stable krypton gas in water, permitting its routine use as a non-radioactive tracer for gas transport measurement and stream reaeration modeling.

The stable isotope krypton gas tracer is more practical than other commonly-used dyes or radiometric tracers which may introduce unwanted elements into the environment. Noble gases neon, xenon, radon, and argon can be analyzed simultaneously, providing a potential for dual tracer analysis to enhance precision and accuracy.
